DESCRIPTION OF THE BOOKThis study of the life of Víctor Paz Estenssoro is divided into two parts: the first half of the book consists of a biography of Paz up to his death in 2001; the second half, in the Appendix, is his autobiography up to 1973 in the form of an English translation of Paz's own narrative presented as the transcribed text of 12 hours of tape-recorded interviews conducted by Dr. Holtey in 1973 in La Paz, Bolivia. This new narrative by Paz relates major facts about his ancestry and events in his life up to the time of the interviews.This revised and expanded version of the author's 2012 authorized Paz biography is an in-depth analysis of Paz's political career from 1938 to 1989—which included three, full four-year terms as president. The Bolivian Social Revolution of 1952 and the subsequent economic, social, and political history of Bolivia cannot be fully understood without a knowledge of the role played by Paz and his political colleagues in the MNR prior to his death in 2001.Paz was the leader of the Movimiento Nacionalista Revolucionario (MNR), a political party which fought the Bolivian National Revolution in the Bolivian Congress as well as in the streets to liberate the working masses from the social and economic slavery imposed on them for many decades by an oligarchy composed of owners of very large tin mines and huge landed estates. As leader of the MNR he played an essential role in the unfolding of the Bolivian National Revolution.The cover picture shows Paz in his apartment in Washington, D.C., in July, 1984 on the day he discussed the first draft of his biography with Dr. Holtey.
